Water in the basement can come from two sources: a plumbing leak or natural groundwater. The repair is completely different for each.
Signs it's a plumbing leak
Water appears regardless of weather. Water is warm (if hot water line). Water bill is rising. Only appears when water is running upstairs. Clean water (vs muddy groundwater). Happens in dry weather too.
Signs it's groundwater
Only appears during or after rain. Water is cold. Multiple walls show moisture simultaneously. Water is muddy or has soil residue. Sump pump runs during rain. Neighbors have similar issues.
How we tell for sure
Plumbing leak: acoustic correlation on pipes, tracer gas testing, flow monitoring. Groundwater: thermal imaging of walls, exterior GPR survey, dye testing during rain. We can definitively distinguish the two.
